Frustrators News from the Bunker Coming July 1st – Jason Chandler Interview with Lisa Booth of Punk Globe

Mysterious Frustrating Image by A Mysterious Frustrator

Breaking News!!

Back in March I reported that there were mysterious and frustrating images appearing on the Frustrators’ Facebook page. The photos were a series of shots with bits and pieces of band equipment and body parts. And lunch. Since the photos appeared, wild rumors of a new album from the Frustrators have been running rampant among the zombies in the bunker, and we’re all… uh, THEY are all… waiting with baited breath (if they could breathe) to hear what’s up with the Frustrators.

I’m happy to report that Lisa Booth, a writer for Punk Globe Zine, has managed to tickle her way through those breathless zombies to interview the elusive lead singer of the Frustrators, Jason Chandler. Chandler’s always working on something or another in the bunker, but he managed to literally break himself away from his work and speak with Booth. I’m not quite sure what they will discuss (maybe confirmation of a new album? maybe playing a gig? maybe what he had for lunch?) so you’ll just have to wait for the next issue that comes out on July 1st. The article will be posted both on Punk Globe and afterward on Booth’s blog, located here.

This zombie is very excited to hear the news, indeed!

Foxboro Hot Tubs by Bob Gruen

Bob Gruen finally posted photos of the two Foxboro Hot Tubs shows that happened in New York City on his website.

Billie Joe chipped his tooth from the Bowery Electric show… THAT’S how much it rocked!

Thanks to Abbey for posting the link!

“Oh Baby Baby, It’s F♥♥k Time” Bracelets

BJA with "It's Fuck Time" Bracelet by ToniAnn. Photo by ToniAnn Graffigna

ToniAnn, an awesome Green Day fan from New York City, was at both Foxboro Hot Tubs shows this past April 23 and 25, 2010, at Don Hill’s and the Bowery Electric. As you may have heard, the Foxies introduced a new song at these shows called “It’s Fuck Time.” (See video and read about the Don Hill show here.) ToniAnn was so… uh… inspired by the Tubbies song, that she created bracelets with the phrase, “Oh Baby Baby, It’s Fuck Time!” on them. Unfortunately, the company that she got them from wouldn’t let her put “FUCK” on the bracelets, so F♥♥K it is!

ToniAnn saw Billie Joe on the street outside of American Idiot on Broadway last week as she was waiting to give some of the bracelets to cast members of the show. According to her story below, Billie Joe loved it! So I guess that means it’s “street approved by BJA.”* (Read ToniAnn’s story below.)

If you’d like to order one for cost (ToniAnn is not making money from this), email her at FBHTbracelets@gmail.com. DO NOT SEND HER CASH until after you have spoken with her by email. She is going to order a second batch soon, so if you want one, particularly in time for the upcoming North American tour and taking into account wait periods for production and shipping, now is the time to order one.

Here’s her story in her own words:

American Idiot/Billie Joe experience May 18, 2010
Wednesday at 8:41pm

So, a few days ago, me and Steph decided we were going to go see American Idiot on Tuesday, along with my friend Billy. It was raining the entire day. In the morning I was thinking of not even going into Manhattan at all. Steph hasn’t seen the play yet and I said to myself ‘eh, fuck it I’ll go’. [The last time I debated going to the city in the rain, I met all of GD on 3/12/2010]. I went to school, came home, called Steph, got ready and etc.

When I got home, I had a package waiting for me…….the glorious ‘O BABY BABY ITS FUCK TIME’ bracelets!! Well…since the company fucked up my bracelets they say ‘O BABY BABY ITS F♥♥K TIME’ which is still very cute by the way. I took a few with me to the show, because I was going to give one to a few of the cast members.

So I get into the city, walked in the rain to ESPN zone, used their bathroom [haha], met up with Steph, and we walked to the St. James Theater. Lottery was at 5pm, cause the show last night was at 7pm. Billy never made it to lotto, but that’s okay since me and Steph didn’t win anyway. They had a limited amount of box seats so we went with those. We took right box, and then left to go to McDs to eat and bullshit about whatever haha….so finally, we walked back to the theater, and took our seats. I was also very annoyed because once we got to the theater, my phone died.

So like 10seconds before the curtain rises…..I look down to the orchestra and I saw like ‘STEPH THAT’S BILL SCHNEIDER’S FUCKING SIDE BURN!! OMG HOLY SHIT THERE’S BILLIE AND ADIE!’ [then the curtain went up.] So the show starts and all I’m thinking is ‘omgomgomgomgomg I must see him sometime before he leaves!’ So….the show was amazing as always. Me and Steph went to the lobby before “Good Riddance” was on, to look at some merch and etc….all of a sudden, Billie walks out the door, escorted by Eddie [or Frank for those who will LOL at this lmao], and goes through the cast entrance. Eddie comes back, pats Steph on the back and goes ‘He’ll be at the bar a little bit later hang tight!’ and walked away. We were like OMG DID HE JUST TELL US WHERE BILLIE WAS GOING TO BE?!?

Everyone from the theater started leaving, and then a security guard approached us, we told him the deal, and he told us to go to the glass doors outside. Once we got outside, we found out that the cast of GLEE was there [who I didn’t see AT ALL].

Now Billy said goodbye to us, and like 5mins later, not even…….Bill Schneider, Adie, Eddie, and Billie come towards the door. Me and Steph were like UHHHHH….so now Billie comes out and his face like fucking lit up and he’s like HEYY….so I of course asked for a picture, and I wish this was taped because he threw his arm up and in his cute little voice he goes ‘YEA YEAH OF COURSE!’ so Steph took the pic of me and Billie, and then I was like ‘can u take one with her too?’ and he’s like ‘YEAA SURE!’

Now at this point, Steph is trying to spit out that she played “Jesus of Suburbia” last year at MSG on July 27…and she couldn’t get it all out so she was like ‘do you remember me….’ and I was like ‘yeahh she played “Jesus of Suburbia” and he was like ‘yeah yeah I remember you! My friend watches that video all the damn time!’ [GDM: View and read about Stephanie’s awesome performance of JOS at Madison Square Garden here.] So then I took their pic, and Steph started to show Billie her tattoos and then I was like ‘OHH I have something for you’ and he’s like ‘ohhh really?!’ So I stuck my hand in the bag and pulled out the Fuck Time bracelet. He looked at it, and idk who the hell he was taking to and he’s like ‘OMG OMG NO FUCKING WAY THIS IS SO GREAT DO U SEE THIS OMG!!!’ so me n him at the same time were like ‘picture with it’ haha so he took one with the bracelet and then we all got hugs. We couldn’t even deal with the fact that he even remembered the both of us cause he said something like ‘oh yeah and u have a tattoo too’ and like I think I butted over him about the bracelet LOL.

ToniAnn tracked down John Gallagher, Jr. and Michael Esper and gave them bracelets as well. As you may know, John and Michael are in the cast of American Idiot and were also at the FBHT Bowery Electric show.

*Disclaimer: the bracelets are not officially endorsed by members of the band or cast… just beloved and… street approved

Hero Volunteers Wanted for Partying in NYC: MKOTC, AI, GD, FBHT… FBHT?!?

In these strange days of exploding volcanoes, political teabagging, and general everyday crappiness, sometimes the only thing you can do to get through it all is to take a party break. As someone who was very politically involved for the last 20 years, I have taken a 21st Century Breakdown Tour Party Break. As such, I readily offer myself as a volunteer for some epic and heroic PARTY duties during the coming week. I recommend heading down to your favorite city if you can as we are recruiting volunteers here in Party Central NYC and we need YOU!

MKOTC: Heroes Aren't Born - They Volunteer!

I have been looking forward to the week of April 19-24 ever since I heard that the Mystic Knights of the Cobra were going to be in town to rock out at four venues in New York and New Jersey: Arlene’s Grocery on the Lower East Side (4/21), Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park (4/22), Don Hill’s in Tribeca (4/23) and the Millhill Basement in good old Trenton (4/24).

I have also been looking forward to seeing American Idiot on 4/22, the day after its Broadway opening, since AI tickets first went on sale back in January or February. Tickets then unexpectedly went on sale on April Fool’s Day 2010 for American Idiot’s opening night (the Holy Lushotology Day of 4/20), and now I’ll be sitting in the balcony on my favorite band’s craziest night of their lives watching while their iconic 2004 album of the same name officially enters the pantheon of Old Broadway. There just might be a few loud audience “AMENS” coming from the balcony during “Holiday.”

The week may get even better, too.  The Reverend Strychnine Twitch tweeted the following to the masses this past Thursday: “Ladys and germs! The tubbies are officially in nyc! Ready to stop drop and bukak! Oooh! Baby girl! Stay tuned for a big bash soon? STING” and I knew our Lushie Nuns Paradise supplications had been answered. Still no word on venue, but the Rev has given us manna from the Twitterverse and it’s all good. And Rich Russo tonight on RXP101.9 announced that the Foxies show will be on Sunday, 4/25, at midnight at a venue that will be announced the day of the show. Oh… and there are only 120 tickets available. Wow. Good luck to us all with that one.

Even though there are so many wonderful things happening this week, what I look forward to the most, though, is partying with old and new friends. Cause that’s what this week is going to ultimately be: Party! Party! Party! Sometimes, partying and enjoying good company is the only thing you can do in the face of so much that is wrong with the world. I hope to see you there. And if you can’t be here, party it up wherever you may be. After all, this week does have a Lushotology Holiday: 420 Day! Here’s to the week ahead!

What’s Up With the Frustrators?

Mysterious Frustrating Image by A Mysterious Frustrator

UPDATE: MORE BUNKER PHOTOS SURFACE ON FACEBOOK! CLICK HERE!

The world of music is somewhat familiar with Green Day’s “alleged” other bands such as The Network and The Foxboro Hot Tubs and Billie Joe’s side project, Pinhead Gunpowder. While these three bands get a bit more fanfare, Mike Dirnt’s Green Day-side project, The Frustrators, gets a bit less of it. They have been around since 1999, mostly playing in their garages and drinking beer, though they have played live a few times over the past ten years. I can’t say that I had heard of them prior to my crazy 21st Century Breakdown plunge starting last year, but my life has been much funnier and happier since I got their two CDs this past December when Adeline Records had a stupid awesome sale on stupid awesome merchandise and music.

Frustrators' Manager, Jimmy Zeus

The Frustrators have one great album out, Achtung Jackass (2002) and an excellent EP entitled Bored in the USA (2000) both of which appear on the Adeline label as well as a song called “Trout” that appears on Adeline’s Might As Well… Can’t Dance compilation from 2000. The song is presented backwards as an added bonus track on Achtung Jackass just cause it sounds as good backwards as it does forward. (You can hear the forward version of “Trout” on the Frustrator’s Myspace site.) The records feature the hysterical (as in funny) lead vocals and rhythm guitar of musician, graphic and comic book artist, Jason Chandler, Terry Lineham (backup vocals and lead guitar), Mike Dirnt on bass, and Art Tedeschi on drums. A brief history of the Frustrators, written by Netty, can be found here.

The band’s self-deprecating lyrics, mixed with a pounding bass and drum section, and blazing lead guitar, makes for some intense and hilarious songs. Chandler’s rye sense of humor, whether singing about getting lost in the Texas desert (“West of Texas”), pirates (“Pirate Song”), tossing midgets (“The Great Australian Midget Toss”), Terry’s lovelife (“I Slept with Terry”), or forlornly singing about a girl who walked away… whether real or imaginary (“Then She Walked Away”)… is a treat and always manages to make me laugh and want to dance. It’s very manly music, too. I am not quite sure how to define “manly” in regards to it, but don’t a lot of manly men long to sing songs of pirates?

Jimmy Zeus, the cigar chomping, monkey manager of the Frustrators, recently posted the mysterious image above on the Frustrators Facebook page. The photo, along with some mysterious and frustrating statements from Zeus (and Chandler, who shows up on Facebook here and there) may be of the band possibly recording tracks during a bit of downtime from Green Day’s ongoing tour. Yawzah!

I hunted Chandler down from within his Zombie-protected bunker to ask what was up, and though he’s tight-lipped about stuff regarding the future of the Frustrators …no doubt because his zombies have eaten his lips away… he managed to three-finger type the following response:

Basically, we’d all love to do another record. We’ve all got some ideas. And actually by crazy strokes of luck we’ve been able to hang out recently. But writing and recording is a long process and can be tricky once you consider all the little difficulties with people’s schedules and my own deep personality problems… So who knows?
–Jason Chandler, from somewhere deep underground (aka Facebook)

So there you have it! Something is up with The Frustrators, though how, when, where, and what are yet to be determined. Why is a bit more simpler… because we need more Frustrators in our lives!

I swear there is a lead singer there somewhere in the dark…

Hella Lot Happening in Green Day Land

Can there be more going on in the Land of Green Day, I ask you?

First of all, they wowed the Far East and Japan with their amazing tour that ended last weekend, while AMEX advance tickets went on sale and the website for American Idiot on Broadway went live; then they announced that the entire cast of AI will be backing them on tonight’s Grammy Awards… and still yet more, tomorrow, February 1st, the video that was shot during the recording of “21 Guns” with the cast will be available on AOL Music. Hot damn, that’s a lot of stuff!

Green Day is nominated for Best Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for “21 Guns,” Best Rock Song for “21 Guns,” and Best Rock Album for 21st Century Breakdown.

You want rehearsal shots of Green Day and the cast you say? Then click here or the pic below.

Rebecca Naomi Jones and Billie Joe Armstrong with Green Day and American Idiot Cast

If you want to hear what’s going on backstage tonight, then follow three of AI’s cast members on Twitter (Gerard Canonico; Declan Bennett; and Libby Winters) or you can follow and tweet to #AIgrammys for all of their updates and more. For those of you around the world, Green Day TV and the Grammy site are streaming the awards live.

Oh, and did I mention that “Last of the American Girls” is being filmed as the next video? I didn’t? Well, consider it mentioned.

In addition to all of this, Green Day donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross for Haiti Relief and Adeline Records raised a lot of money through their Charity auction that ended yesterday. I’m not sure how much was raised, but the test pressing of American Idiot that was being auctioned went for about $1100. A true prize for any collector and helpful for the Haiti relief efforts at well.

Oh wait! Did you hear that an unreleased Foxboro Hot Tubs video (and no, they are not Green Day) to Stop, Drop and Roll was leaked and is out there somewhere? You are going to have look for it yourself, though. It’s pretty great, but it’s also pretty obvious that the band didn’t want the video out at this time as Warner Brothers is yanking it from Youtube  left and right.

Lastly, on a slightly sad note, the Green Day Community forum has experienced a bad server crash and they don’t know yet whether they have lost their huge database of postings. This isn’t the Green Day Authority, but the forum. The GDA is still up and running and they will let everyone know as soon as they can what is going on. Keep your fingers crossed!

American Idiot on Broadway on Facebook posted a picture of the New York Times full-page advertisement from today’s edition. See that after the jump, and now, I’m out of here since I’m watching the Red Carpet on E! and the TVGN networks. If you don’t want to watch all of the Grammys, the AI twits have noted that they will be performing toward the beginning of tonight’s show.

Whew! That’s a hella lot!

Highlights From The Breakdown: A Quick One While He’s Away

A conversation on Facebook comparing Green Day’s two shows at Madison Square Garden back in July and their two shows at London’s O2 in October prompted me to think of Green Day’s version of The Who’s “A Quick One While He’s Away.” Four people, including me, had seen all four shows and except for one, agreed that while both second nights were better, (because the second night is always better), we felt that London’s 2nd show was the winner for various reasons. However, Dawn, who I’ve mentioned before, had one caveat: Green Day’s performance of “A Quick One While He’s Away,” from the second show at Madison Square Garden.

This performance took MSG by surprise because no one in their right mind expected it. The song is one of four bonus tracks from the iTunes release of 21st Century Breakdown and unless you had that album version (the CD and I believe the vinyl versions have different bonus tracks) you were kinda lost as to what was going on.

I remember being a little nervous at the hesitant start for the band. It’s a long and slightly complicated song and who knows how many times they had actually rehearsed it. After a few bars they let go and went with it and I realized that what I was seeing was a very rare performance, especially since Billie Joe noted that it was the first (and probably the last) time that they had performed it. There may be good reason for that as the crowd took a while to warm up to it but I am not sure if the audience ever completely got into it. I did, but I was in the pit, behind one row of bodies and I was pretty damned happy with having heard it live at least once.

So, I got to thinking about the performance and wanted to watch it again, so I’ve posted it below. It’s not the best of videos, but it is the entire seven minute song:

Fast forward to that ficticious band, the Foxboro Hot Tubs, and their gig in London on November 1st. The Foxies (my silly pet name for them) broke the song out and repeated the ‘You Are Forgiven’ a billion times. Here they are having a crazy time with it and the two versions, from, um, two different bands, is like night and day. There are three short “A Quick One” clips on Youtube from the secret show in London and the clip below is the longest one. All of them are very short, which probably had something to do with booze.

Lushie Church of Wishful Thinking Edition: Prima Donna = Foxboro Hot Tubs in the UK?

Prima Donna Opens for Green Day in Europe

Prima Donna Opens for Green Day in Europe

I will admit that at times I am a card-carrying member of the Church of Wishful Thinking.* I can’t help it. I want to believe that all sorts of things are possible – world peace, the end of famine, a sane Republican Party, aliens – you know, stuff like that. Unfortunately, world peace is probably unattainable because people suck, the end of famine won’t happen because agribusiness is too strong, a sane Republican Party is currently an oxymoron, and aliens wouldn’t dare come to Planet Earth at the moment what with the shape that we’re in and all… though they would probably get a great exchange rate right now. The entire planet is half off!

However, some things can be inferred (right or wrong), and I would like to throw the rumor out there that somewhere in Europe (probably in England), the Foxboro Hot Tubs will play some secret shows.

How do I know? I don’t, but I present the following:
1. The Reverend Strychnine Twitch, lead singer of the Foxboro Hot Tubs and supposed lead singer and guitarist of Green Day, wrote in a May 30, 2008 FBHT blog post the following: “and with that said, thanks to all the Tub Heads for coming out for our first tour. Will there be more? I got you on my mind, england…STING!!!!! The Reverend Strychnine Twitch.”
2. Prima Donna, a great band from Los Angeles, will be opening for Green Day for the entire European tour.
3. Chinatown, one of the members of the Foxboro Hot Tubs, is rumored to be Kevin Preston, a member of Prima Donna.
4. Someone who will remain nameless and who saw FBHT on their tour last year, asked someone else who will also remain nameless and is a member of the Hot Tubs, if they were going to play in England at some point and the answer was in the affirmative.
5. Lastly, I just want it to happen something bad. If it happens on Green Day’s day off, Sunday, October 25th, this will be the icing on my wishful thinking cake. I’ll be in London that day after seeing Green Day the previous two nights at the 02. STINNG!!!

Like Mulder from the X-Files, I WANT TO BELIEVE.

We’ll see what happens.

The Lushie Gods be praised.
