I first saw Green Day perform last year in Central Park for the morning television show, Good Morning, America. Yeah, I was a little late in seeing them for the first time, to say the least, but actually seeing them the first time in such a strange setting was… priceless. And yes, I know that they’ve been in stranger places than the set of a morning talk show. But this one was at the least, weird. A few photos that I took of the show can be found here.
Needless to say, I didn’t know what the next year would bring. I traveled to London to see them in October, Los Angeles in November, Pinhead Gunpowder in February and spent March and April with their new musical on Broadway. And then there were the Foxboro Hot Tubs. I am a lucky girl. The post below is from an old blog, one that I kept during the early part of this century. It’s predominantly political in nature, and then, I just got tired of politics and mayhem. All I wanted to do was dance and heal the world with party mayhem. Anyway, I don’t write on that blog anymore, but this is one of the last posts that I wrote, on my way to a 21st Century Breakdown.
Writing this intro, I just had a thought that I couldn’t get rid of: I would love to see Green Day play on the Great Lawn or somewhere, in Central Park, Coney Island, or Jones Beach. Either would be fabulous, but Central Park, under the stars of Manhattan and the punks of its streets… ha, it would be a dream show. Anyway, this is from May 22, 2009.

Gallery Players, The Who's "Tommy"
I woke up at a God-awful hour this morning after trotting in late last night. I had seen a production of The Who’s Tommy, and afterward consumed a couple of Czech beers at the Czech biergarden on 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn. Needless to say, I got home ’round ’bout midnight and to make sure I got to Central Park at or before the alloted time of 6:00AM, I rolled out of bed at 4:15 or 4:20 or 4:25 or 4:30 or 4:35 AM or some time or the other.
But, I did get up!
I was still thinking about the Tommy production at the Gallery Players in Brooklyn (or at least the songs were still rolling around in my head) from the night before when I finally pulled on some clean undies but the same clothes from the night before (ok, I put on a clean shirt) and stumbled out of the door into the dark.
I argued with myself about catching the 2/3 or the Q/N and since the N goes the closest to the Summer Stage site, I decided to start with the Q and move on to the N at 14th. But the stupid thing was that the Q came on a dime and I got in and instead of going all the way to 57th and 7th, the closest stop that the Q goes to CPE (which is a bit aways from the stage entrance at 69th and 5th), I actually got off the swift arriving Q at 14th and waited for a considerable length of time for the N. Just call me an idiot.
Long and boring story cut short, I got to the line in Central Park, and had a pretty good spot in it, but if I had stayed on the Q to 7th Avenue… well, it ain’t THAT far away, and I would have had a better spot and initially would have been closer to the stage. Oh. Well.
We finally started moving around 6:15AM and eventually got to Summer Stage about 7:00AM. Green Day did a soundcheck (in front of the entire audience), playing bits and pieces of songs for levels. Billie Joe mentioned that it was the craziest soundcheck EVAH (I bet he says that to all the soundcheck.. uh.. live audiences), and you know what? He was right.
“American Idiot,” Central Park Summer Stage, May 22, 2009
After the soundcheck, the band went off stage for a bit and we were subjected to the backstage workings of a teevee show: the stage manager who tells an audience of thousands what to do for the next 2 hours; the stage hands and tuners who know that they are so cool to be where they are and you’re not so cool where you are; the comedian who warms the audience in advance of the show and who you eventually want to punch; the endless standing around, waiting for the seconds and minutes to tick off to the next shot.
At some point, we were subjected to actually listening to the show playback being pumped through the speakers during segments. Sam Champion, the Maestro of weather prediction, blond hair, and hospitality, went into a weather spot. The PA was turned off which sent the young punks into a frenzied chorus of “Fuck the weather.” The stage manager had to come on and remind the crowd that even thought this event was happening in New York, the live feed was going out to Minnesota and that they might actually care about the weather.
Eventually the band came back onstage around 8:30 AM and the spectacle of Green Day meets Good Morning, America was in full force. The dichotomy of a mature (mostly) post/present punk-pop band against the backdrop of ABC’s ‘Good Morning American Idiot’ (the song and show redubbed as such by Billie Joe during Green Day’s introduction) made for a super-crazed mindmeld at 8:30 in the way-too-early-to-be-in-Central-Park morning.
Oh, but did they rock.
I know that this was an abbreviated set from a band under pressure to work the audience and try not to laugh too much at the setting. Tre Cool was noticeably agitated about the setting (or I should probably say naturally agitated in general) but I’ve never felt so lovingly cared for by a band before. With all those crazy bodies flying, rock and punk shows can get a little scary. Especially if you bogart your way toward the mosh pit after the first song commences because you MUST be closer to where the dancing fools are… but I was extremely polite about it and said excuse me and thank you as I barreled through the dense audience and finally broke into the magic of that spot in a punk show that lets you get loose without getting smashed in the face a mere two to three feet to the left. Man, sometimes I wish I were a guy and I would really get in there. Some women do… but very few and far between. I get near it, but alas, my brain may feel young, but my body insists otherwise.
The real show list was (if I remember correctly) was “Know Your Enemy,” “American Idiot,” “21st Century Breakdown,” “East Jesus Nowhere,” “She,” “Longview” (a snippet of it at least for a breakaway shot; I understand that the censors had trouble censoring the song during the live play out to Minnesota; please excuse the shits and fucks, our bad), and an unbroadcast rendition of “Jesus of Suburbia.”
Special guest stars included a little girl who danced with Billie Joe during “East Jesus Nowhere” and a girl from the audience who helped with ‘Dearly Beloved’ from “Jesus of Suburbia” and was in ecstasy over her good fortune.

Sweeney Todd in a Catholic school auditorium under the Verranzano.
A note about the last week: I’ve had a smashing week of entertainment. It started last Friday with a crazed community theater production of Sweeney Todd in the far nether regional hinterlands of Brooklyn, performed in a Roman Catholic school auditorium. The production values were horrible, but the singing was tolerable and at times enjoyable, though there was a noted lack of…hmm… how shall I put this… actors. My friend, Beth Elaine Smith played the lead as Mrs. Lovett, and she was great, as usual, but that’s why they cast her as Mrs. Lovett because she can sing AND act! My week continued on Wednesday with a stop at the Broadhurst Theater in NYC for a performance of Mary Stuart, written by the Father of German theater, the playwright Friedrich Schiller, complete with a full onstage rainstorm and a pair of marvelous actresses in the roles of Queen Elizabeth I and her doomed sister, Mary, Queen of Scots. My surreal and groovy stop with the deeply trouble pinball wiz, Tommy at the Gallery Players, threw me back into the world of Brooklyn musical theater with MUCH better production values, solid acting, and yet another church basement, but I didn’t catch the denomination on the way in… it might also be a former school, alá P.S. 122, I can’t remember. And then my last stop with Green Day, today, Friday.
What a great week its been, despite the biopsy (more about that when I find out what’s going on), and my tooth filling coming out over the weekend. Yay for the ups and downs of life.
Both issues worked out fine – GDM
All of my theater days are bit numbered for a while, though I have bought some theater and band tickets for shows later in the summer. I live with two roommates and they are both moving out. Our lease is up at the end of July. I have to hoard resources a bit from here on out until this yet-another-apartment move takes place. I really don’t look forward to it.
Fortunately, this Happy Woman saw Green Day today and they made her bop her head, which was sorely needed. Just in time to pack in some energy for the next steps.
And that was the first time. It has turned out to be a great year so far. Thanks, dudes! Can’t wait for the next round in August and September!
A year ago today, 21st Century Breakdown was released, the first studio album from Green Day since their last album. (You know, American Idiot.) Happy Anniversary, 21st Century Breakdown!
In celebration of the anniversary and Green Day’s getting back on the road come this May 29 in the Netherlands, take some time to listen to 21st Century Breakdown today! It’s gotten a bit neglected in the last few months. Revisit Christian and Gloria. I wonder what they’ve been up to lately?
I have no further information except for the following additional dates for Venezuela, Colombia and Argentina, which are additions to Greenday.com announcing dates for Brazil, Costa Rica and Peru yesterday. These dates ARE NOT on Greenday.com now, at the moment, and come from and from the Green Day Community thread on South America. The list below was found on a press release at Tuentrada.com. I hope YOUR country is on it! If not, get yourself to another country, if you can. And hopefully more Central American dates will pop up, too. Keep the faith, Lushies! 🙂
Hmm… how would you say Lushotology in Spanish or Portuguese, I wonder?
It’s been 12 years since Green Day last hit South America’s biggest country, Brazil. Twelve long, cold years for our South American friends. Well, their wait is over! Today Greenday.com announced several dates in October for the countries of Brazil (four dates), Peru (one date) and the Central American country of Costa Rica (one date). Once announced, the Twitterverse went crazy and Green Day trended for a few hours on word of the news. No other dates or countries have been announced at this point, so stay tuned to Greenday.com in case more countries and dates are added. And congrats! You’re gonna have a blast!

I’ve been meaning to highlight another Snoo that I met in England (see “Los Luchadors and Las Luchadoras“), Kryssi Kay. Kryssi was pulled onstage during Green Day’s show at London’s O2 on October 24th when Billie Joe excitedly saw her in her Snoo mask during “21st Century Breakdown.”
Green Day – 21st Century Breakdown – London, October 24th featuring Kryssi Kay at 4:03 as the “Snoo”
It's Lushotology!
Kryssi has her own Zazzle site and she’s got some nice merchandise. You can use the image to the left to meditate on the wise words and actions of the Reverend Strychnine Twitch and the Church of Lushotology. For wise words from the Reverend (ok, it’s not the REAL Reverend, but some wise words happen anyway), check out this Facebook page.
Speaking of Lushotology, John Roecker, the mad punk genius and Black Pope of the Church of Lushotology, has created a video all about the Church and its “tenets.” You can watch that below.

Green Day’s Japanese tour leg began early this morning, Eastern Standard time, and the fan community is hella happy with an acoustic version of “Redundant” that was played at the second encore. There is a video, but I’m going to wait to see if a better one shows up. Tony Anastazi, who I met in London, traveled from London to Osaka to see the tour. He showed up without a ticket after not being able to find a way to purchase them from England. Luckily, he met a Japanese fan on the Green Day Community who is also going to the four shows in Japan who offered to help with the translations and tickets and such. Yay for the Green Day Community, helping each other out all over the world! Party on! Tony has promised to share his memories of the concert at the GDC when he gets a chance.
Green Day wrapped up their visits to Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong with a bang and praise… as well as a bit of a scandal on Korean News regarding a “Deep Kiss” that a girl planted on Billie after she sang Longview. It’s very similar to the ‘kiss-storm’ that happened after MSG1 so long ago, back in July. Except that it didn’t make the news! LOL. Oops. Suffice it to say, the boys certainly made an impression, to say the least, in the Far East. Here are articles from the show in Hong Kong (in Chinese) and Singapore from greenday.com. One of the funniest things I read about the shows (I forget where), was Bangkok fans who gleefully noted that Billie’s propensity of audience mooning during songs would “never go over in Malaysia.” Sorry Malayasian fans! You are shit out of luck, methinks!
In the title news, we have two shows coming up that feature Green Day. The first one coming is “World Stages: Green Day Live from Munich,” which Europe saw a couple of months ago. It premieres in North America on VH1, this Friday, January 22 at 11:00 PM in a 1/2 version and then again on the HD channel, “Palladia,’ in an hour version on January 23rd at 9:00 PM. I have no idea what Palladia is, but they seem to have a link to iTunes, so maybe this Munich concert will one day be available for sale there. I don’t have an HD television, so I don’t speak the HD language, but I am a bit sad that the version I can watch is only a half hour. Bummer.
VH1’s Friday Night Alright
MTV World Stage: Green Day (Live from Munich, Germany)
On 1/22 (tomorrow night) at 11pm EST/PST on VH1 (30 minute version)
On 1/23 (Saturday night) at 9pm EST/PST on Palladia (60 minute version)
Rudy's Can't Fail on Food Network
Rudy’s Can’t Fail, Mike’s fabulous diner in Emeryville, CA, will be featured on the Food Network this weekend! Airing this Monday, January 25th, at 10 PM EST, Guy Fieri, who regularly explores different “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” is making a stop at Rudy’s and will probably try one of the “Shakin’ Jesses,” though I could never quite figure out what it was. LOL. Seriously, I had a great meal and a great time meeting folks at Rudy’s when I went out to the East Bay last September to see “American Idiot.” Highly recommended on a Punk Tour of the East Bay.
Speaking of Mike, Chris Dugan took some great pictures of the Hong Kong show (as usual, his work nicely highlights the band), with some especially great ones of Mike. Go to Greenday.com for more photos.

Billie Joe's Guitar - Screenshot by CarmenPunkGirl
Thanks to Chinese fans at the Green Day Community, we have some video of Green Day in China, including this one, the acoustic solo. Billie gave away his Gibson “Billie Joe” inlay acoustic guitar at the end of the second encore. Don’t mind the singing along in the video. It’s how it’s supposed to be. These songs were meant for everyone to sing, together. I can only imagine what was going through Billie, Mike, and Tre’s minds as they performed in China for the first time and the arena sang with them.
Good times, I presume.
To whoever received his guitar, please use it to sing songs of rebellion, freedom, beer, sex, and courage. Thanks.
Green Day Press Conference – Bangkok – January 11, 2010
Green Day landed in Thailand and then headed off to a press conference. It’s a pretty funny interview where the band “endorses” Singha beer, Tre opens a beer with a water bottle, Billie proves that he can’t count and gives a nice answer to the interviewer’s question about President Obama and in the end, they are all swamped by flowers. It reminded me of the musical Flower Drum Song for a moment there. All in all, it’s a great press conference and very fun to see the boys saying silly stuff again.
The clip also has also an awesome shout-out to Prima Donna when the interviewer asks them about their opening band. The boys praise PD… and Tre notes that they are huge in Spain and Portugal!
Speaking of Prima Donna, Kevin Preston tweeted this when they got to their hotel room yesterday:
“We are now in Thailand. I am lounging around butt naked in my hotel room 😉 xoxoKevin”
I’m not sure if that is quite what I had in mind when I hoped that Prima Donna (and Green Day) would tweet about their trip to the Far East, but hell, I’ll take it. The visual alone is well worth it. Now, let’s hope there is video!
*thanks to Green Day LIVE on Tour on Facebook for the press conference footage.
Far East Shows - Green Day with guests Prima Donna
Prima Donna just tweeted their farewells to the States as they and presumably, Green Day, head off to the Far East. The tour starts on January 12 with stops that include Bangkok, where GD performed in the 90s, and three new stops: Singapore, South Korea, and a place where Green Day has mentioned wanting to make an album, China (or more specifically, Hong Kong). The tour ends with four stops in Japan. I’m not sure if we’ll get videos on Youtube for these shows, including the four in Japan, which is a bit of a shame. Not too many people on either the Green Day Community or the Idiot Club have many members, and while there is an official Japanese fan club, I cannot read it! And truthfully, if it’s as sucky as the official Idiot Club is wont to be.. well, I’ve said too much already.
It would be nice to have some in-depth reports from both the band and fans as Green Day hits three new countries for the first time. Hey guys, this seriously calls for tweeting! Come on, you can do it! 🙂
I’m sure though, that Prima Donna will share their road trip with us, particularly if it’s their first trip to the Far East. Prima Donna made two lovely videos of their time in Europe. You can watch Pt. II of Prima Donna’s tour here.
We’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed that Green Day fans in the Far East will post some videos of both bands rocking out in Asia. There is one lucky fellow that I know who will be heading to Japan to see them, if he can get tickets to the shows when he gets there. It’s been a little impossible to order tickets for the shows in Japan from England but I’m sure he’ll be fine when he gets there!
Until then, have a blast guys, and please, obey ALL local laws. LOL. Thanks!
