Songs I’d Like To Hear Live From 21st Century Breakdown

Horseshoes and and Handgrenades - Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown

Alright, I fess up. Since Green Day’s Twitter has been going atwitter, I’ve paid a bit more attention to their Twitter feed. For a while there it was only Tweets about contests, with the occasional personal zinger thrown in. After a really bad case of Twitter spam a few months ago in their feed, I stopped getting the tweets sent directly to my phone due to the glitch. I only recently started them again (after I remembered that I had turned them off in the first place), but now I don’t get them regularly on my phone. And there’s been so many lately!

We have no idea what started the Twitter chatter, presumably mostly from Billie Joe (or someone tweeting for him), and goodness only knows how long this trend will continue, but let’s hope for a bit longer at least. For a band to go from 1 to 2 personal tweets a month to like a billion (alright, I’m exaggerating) a day… OK, about 10 in ONE WEEK, means that a bunch of people would notice at the same time.

When it first happened, the Twitterverse of Green Day squealed like boys and girls, and you know how much I hate squealing (it’s not very punk), so I didn’t squeal externally, though I did let out an internal squee, and then got a bit embarrassed by some of the responses (my own internal Tweets as well as others’ external ones) to Green Day. Not mine, I would never Tweet, “You have a cute ass, Tre,” or “BIILLIIEE!” so I did a Twitter facepalm that didn’t come out quite as funny as I had hoped, haha. The knowledgeable Abbey tweeted to me that a few squees in the Twitterverse by teenies is probably OK, and I think she’s right! Abbey has been sending the funniest Tweets to them for months now, just crazy funny stuff.

Anyway, I tweeted to @greenday a few times that I would love to hear one of the few songs from 21st Century Breakdown that I’ve yet to hear: “Horseshoes and Handgrenades.” I’ve been fortunate to go to a lot of shows over the past months, but I wasn’t at the Fox Theater performance in Oakland back in May 2009, nor at the smaller performances in New York City at the Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall, and a performance for a small group at PC Richards (very small crowd) that didn’t go over very well for some reason. I don’t know what they played at PC Richards, but the set was short and according to folks who were there, the crowd didn’t really know the music and there weren’t many hardcore fans. Green Day tended to play the entirety of 21st Century Breakdown during those first shows. UPDATE: “Horseshoes and Handgrenades” has only been played at the Fox Theater show from talking about it with a friend yesterday.

There’s a video of an interview with the band from last year where they are asked which song that they would like to hear on the radio, and Tre said, “Horseshoes and Handgrenades.” [SEE VIDEO HERE @ 15:30] I would, too!

Of course, I don’t expect to get a response nor actually hear Green Day play the song on the tour, but it would be great to hear the powerful songs on 21st Century Breakdown that rarely get played: the angry and defiant, “Horseshoes and Handgrenades,” the melodic and sad “Restless Heart Syndrome,” and the stringed, fast, and exotic Latino-flavored “Peacemaker” and “¿Viva La Gloria? (Little Girl),” both reminding me a bit of “Misery.” I’m not quite sure about the last songs I haven’t heard, “Christian’s Inferno” (it acts more as a story bridge in the album than a stand-alone song to me) and I’d like to hear “See the Light,” but I’m not sure how well that would work live. Not sure if anyone else would want to hear it, either. I’ve seen one video of it from last year at a small club in Paris, but the Youtube video was taken down. It’s a song that means a bit to me, as I try and strive to actually ‘see the light,’ but often fail.

I’m going to the show in Hartford tonight, and I most particularly want to hear “Horseshoes and Handgrenades,” for the lyrics, and the combination of Mike and Tre’s bass and drums. The sound of boots hits the ground, and Tre’s drums pound out a steady beat with Mike’s bass really getting a workout through the song. One of the things I don’t hear enough of in 21st Century Breakdown is Mike’s bass, and “Horseshoes and Handgrenades” highlights well the work that he and Tre do on Green Day albums as a team.

On top of that, how can you not want to hear a song that, as Cool says in the Absolut interview, “comes out of the box with the words ‘I’m not fucking around?'” And live, no less? Anyway, here’s to hoping that sometime during this tour, the boys will throw in gems from 21st Century Breakdown while everyone screams for “Geek Stink Breath,” “One of My Lies,” or any other number of “rare” Green Day songs. Though if they want to throw in a “F.O.D.” or “Dominated Love Slave” or any of the others, I won’t complain. Oh, and yes please, again, to “Letterbomb.”

“Horseshoes and Handgrenades” – Green Day

I’m not fucking around
I think I’m coming out
All the deceivers and cheaters
I’ve think we’ve got a bleeder right now
Want you to slap me around
Want you to knock me out
Well, you missed me kissed me
Now you better kick me down

Maybe you’re the runner up
But the first one to lose the race
Almost only really counts in
Horseshoes and hand grenades

I’m gonna burn it all down
I’m gonna rip it out
Well, everything that you employ
Was meant for me to destroy
To the ground now
So don’t you fuck me around
Because I’ll shoot you down
I’m gonna drink, fight and fuck
And pushing my luck
All the time now

Maybe you’re the runner up
But the first one to lose the race
Almost only really counts in
Horseshoes and hand grenades

Demolition, self-destruction
What to annihilate
The age-old contradiction
Demolition, self-destruction
What to annihilate
This old age

I’m not fucking around
I think I’m coming out
I’m a hater
A traitor
In a pair of Chuck Taylors
Right now
I’m not fucking around

You are a Hot Mess, Billie Joe!

So, I’m watching this clip of the boys (actually Billie Joe since Mike and Tre never get a word in edgewise during these interviews) talk with TV Guide Network backstage at the Grammys the other night. In this clip, Billie called himself a “hot mess,” which kinda freaked me out a bit, because I’ve called him a “hot mess” on this blog before. Dude! Are you stalking me? Hmmm? (And yep, I know it was the name of the roadie band! I’m joking, people!!)

Anyway, here’s a nice little clip found by Green Day LIVE on Tour on Facebook after Green Day won their Grammy on Sunday night for “Best Rock Album” and the American Idiot cast performed “21 Guns” with the band. Enjoy, you hot messes out there!

New Green Day Mind Banner and a Note on Haiti

Violeta from the Green Day Community, who created my previous banner, kindly updated Green Day Mind to start the year off and commemorate Green Day’s first concert of the new decade that happened on January 12, 2010 in Bangkok. The photo was taken at the press conference given by the band on Sunday, January 11, after they landed.

Thank you, Violeta! Awesome job, as always!

*When I first started this blog, I wanted to occasionally talk about “Green things” besides Green Day. Primarily, the world, I suppose, outside of a rock band named after a color. When the Iranian Green Revolution first went down back in June, I wrote:

When describing “21st Century Breakdown,” Green Day usually says that it’s a (paraphrasing) “collection of pictures of things that happen in the world and America with a seeming new crisis everyday.” The onslaught of everyday living can be overwhelming, that’s for sure. I really hope, however, I never get to the point where I don’t care what happens to someone else, as long as I’m left alone. The planet really is too small for that crap. I may not be able to do much and I may not know everything or even anything, but this I know: Iranian men are beautiful and Persian culture is about 500 times longer than ours. I also know that what happens in Iran doesn’t stay in Iran. What happens in Iran affects us all.

Now, I’d just like to say, what happens in Haiti doesn’t stay in Haiti. What happens in Haiti affects us all because here’s another 21st Century Breakdown moment happening, and it’s a doozy.

As you may have heard, the country of Haiti, located in the Caribbean and sharing the island of Hispaniola with the country of the Dominican Republic, suffered a devastating, 7.0, earthquake on Tuesday that ripped through the Haitian portion of the island, demolishing the capital, Port-au-Prince. Needless to say, not many buildings stand and there are a lot of people who have died. It’s the very definition of a humanitarian crisis, and that distinction was already in Haiti prior to the current situation.

Haiti is a country that has suffered centuries of deprivation, political mayhem, natural disasters and human misery. The Haitian portion of the island was colonized by the French, who brought slaves from Africa to work the land. The legacy of slavery in Haiti was one of the worst ever in terms of conditions of living, disease and despair. In 1791, the slaves of Haiti overthrew their masters, and after several years of fighting, Haiti became the site of the first and only successful slave rebellion.

There have been coups since then, political mechanizations both inside and outside of the country; hurricanes have battered the land, and the forests of the island, milled to within an inch of their lives, have been cut down for sugar cane fields, the timber industry and the lighting of the family hearth. The population is black and poverty stricken, full of proud people who love their country and are tired of its ongoing misery.

Haiti needs help right now.

Food. Water. Shelter. Doctors. That is all. There should be no argument, no thinking about the need to do it, only how to do it. I was a bit hot under the collar yesterday when Pat Robertson, an evangelical minister here in the United States claimed that Haiti continually suffered because they had performed Voodoo ceremonies and bonded with the Devil in order to gain their freedom from the French. Because, y’know, that’s the only way Slaves could ever overcome their Masters, I suppose. OK, he didn’t say that last part, but that’s what it sounded like to me. I’m not even going to go into what Rush Limbaugh said about the situation, I’m already bordering on my head exploding. Suffice it to say, it’s not the time for such talk. Food. Water. Shelter. Doctors.

I have a friend in Haiti at the moment. She works for a Non-Governmental Organization and was sent to Haiti to help with the country’s computer infrastructure. She’s now huddling in a company place. She’s lucky. She can leave and has a bed to sleep in. There are millions in Haiti who have neither luxury. If food, water, shelter and doctors do not arrive and are mobilized soon, an out-of-control situation will escalate into more of a nightmare than it is already.

Please consider contributing to the American Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders, or any charity that you may wish to donate to. There may also be food drives in your area that need help as well. Haiti’s natural resources such as forests and water supplies are decimated. Learn more about natural resources and how you can help stop deforestation and water contamination at the Green Day + National Resources Defense Council here.

I have been crying a lot over this today. But Violeta’s banner made me a bit happier. After the jump, you can view his design from last year.

Green Day at the MTV Video Music Awards: Kill the Pyro!!! Kill the Pyro!!!

SweetVendetta at the GDA recently saw this MTV special on the backstage antics at the MTV Video Music Awards last September. Green Day held an impromptu performance after their rehearsal for the tired MTV crew. During the live performance, Billie and Mike dragged a bunch of people onstage without telling anyone that they were going to do it… and while all those people were engulfing the “about 5″8″‘ Billie, Tre couldn’t see him to end the song. The MTV crew had to “kill the pyro” before anyone from the audience was set on fire. The clip also includes the pyro that was supposed to happen in the song. I’m not quite sure why they had to kill the pyro since it was behind Tre… but… it was probably for the best!

It’s a funny clip, and also has a backstage view of Pink’s amazing high-trapeze performance as well.

Here’s the link to MTV’s October 13, 2009 Buzzworthy blog which includes other backstage videos as well.

You can see the clip of Green Day’s full performance here. You can read about my heading up to Radio City Music Hall since I was in the neighborhood and seeing GD leave rehearsal here. (And yes, I WAS JUST IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD that day…no. Seriously. I was!)

NYT: Reggae and Rock Operas, Intimacies and Anthems

Clover at the Green Day Authority posted a link to a nice article from the New York Times written by Jon Pareles on what he considers 2009’s best in music. Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown is at #3 with the following:

3. GREEN DAY “21st Century Breakdown” (Reprise) Green Day’s second rock opera is more ambitious than “American Idiot”: richer, more diverse, more urgent, more flat-out tuneful and also more confusing. The ultimate target of the songs’ rage and frustration can be unclear — the most pointed song can only ask “Do you know your enemy?” — but the ambition and the spirit of punky rebellion are strong. (Jon Pareles, New York Times)

Maybe he could have left the word, “punky” out, but it’s a good blurb. And I don’t know if 21st Century Breakdown is “confused” so much as “ambiguous.” However, I completely agree with the “ambition and spirit” part. Anyway, pop on over to read Pareles’ other picks as well as listen to clips of select music, including “Know Your Enemy.”

Go Mix This and Listen to Lauren’s Mash Up

As you may know, Verizon sponsored the North American leg of Green Day’s tour that kicked off back in July of 2009. Verizon produced the numerous soundchecks that occurred during the tour (I believe the soundchecks were great events for fans but I am not quite sure what the band thought of them), as well as free t-shirts, food, games, cool photographs outside of the venues that were flashed onto the big boards above the stadiums pre-show, and concert footage at both the VCast Verizon GD site and Facebook.

The Green Day VCast site is now offering you the chance to re-mix a few songs from 21st Century Breakdown. The best remix wins some awesome gifts: both a guitar and a drum kit signed by Billie or Tre.

Go on over and remix your own and take a listen to the entry by Lauren Banjo. Lauren attended one of the soundchecks during the tour, and actually got Billie Joe  to sing “Misery” from Warning during the soundcheck by providing him with the lyrics. It was epic.

You can read about my take on the somewhat sacred vibe of the soundcheck (or rehearsal), for the performer, here.

East Jesus Nowhere – Ticket to Hell Has Never Been So Fun!

NOTE: I drafted this a while ago but never published it.

Blasphemy - A Ticket to Hell Has Never Been Funnier

Blasphemy - A Ticket to Hell Has Never Been Funnier

I will mince no words: I like to curse and I have little respect for organized religion. In this video from Green Day’s show in Sacramento earlier this year, Green Day managed to provide me with cursing and remind me just how little respect I have for organized religion. Once again, Green Day has the courage to call hypocrisy when they see it.

Billie Throwing a Guy Out and East Jesus Nowhere – “Fuck me? Nononononono, fuck YOU mother fucker.” – Green Day, Sacramento, August 24, 2009

With that said, I want to take a moment to put the title of the posting into context… and then hopefully say something. We’ll see if any of the above happens.

During the American tour (which can provide a basic roadmap for those of you looking forward to the European, Australian, New Zealand and Asian tours), “East Jesus Nowhere,” was usually the fourth song of the show, preceded by “Song of the Century,” “21st Century Breakdown,” and “Know Your Enemy.” Billie may say some crazy stuff about pot-smoking and fornicating at the beginning, (haha, one only hopes he does!), and then the band launches into the song. At the record’s bridge, Billie asks the audience to provide a child, any child about 10 years or so of age, which parents in the house readily do. Billie then ‘saves’ this sweet and innocent youngster. I’m never sure what he’s saving the kid from, but I know that I would have much rather been saved by a Billie Joe than by a preacher.

Here comes the requisite disclaimer in this day and age: I do not dislike religion itself. My philosophy is worship anything you want but do not force me to worship the same way that you do. Don’t try to save me and I won’t try to save you, unless I see you about to get hit by a car on the street. Don’t preach purity when your bathroom is filthy. Or something like that.*

East Jesus Nowhere” is a powerful and problematic song. It’s destined to be on the radio. It’s also destined to cause some religious circles to go ballistic if it makes it there.

There’s been some buzz about whether the lyrics will be changed when it gets more airplay. I really hope the band doesn’t change a bit of it. We’ll see what the future brings. In fact, I heard it on the radio when driving in my rental car a while back and some words had been obliterated. Needless to say, I screamed a little bit.

East Jesus Nowhere lyrics

Raise your hands now to testify
Your confession will be crucified
You’re a sacrificial suicide
Like a dog that’s been sodomized
Stand up! – All the white boys
Sit down! – All the black girls
You’re the soldiers of the new world

Put your faith in a miracle
And it’s non-denominational
Join the choir we will be singing
In the church of wishful thinking

A fire burns today
Of blasphemy and genocide
The sirens of decay
Will infiltrate the faith fanatics

Oh bless me lord for I have sinned
It’s been a lifetime since I last confessed
I threw my crutches in “The river
Of a shadow of doubt”
And I’ll be dressed in my Sunday best

Say a prayer for the family
Drop a coin for humanity
Ain’t this uniform so flattering?
I never asked you a God damned thing

A fire burns today
Of blasphemy and genocide
The sirens of decay
Will infiltrate the faith fanatics

Don’t test me
Second guess me
Protest me
You will disappear

I want to know who’s allowed to breed
All the dogs who never learned to read
Missionary politicians
And the cops of a new religion

A fire burns today
Of blasphemy and genocide
The sirens of decay
Will infiltrate the inside

-also, these are my opinions alone and do not reflect anything that anyone else might think or say. There, I think that covers it.
