Green Day at the MTV Video Music Awards: Kill the Pyro!!! Kill the Pyro!!!

SweetVendetta at the GDA recently saw this MTV special on the backstage antics at the MTV Video Music Awards last September. Green Day held an impromptu performance after their rehearsal for the tired MTV crew. During the live performance, Billie and Mike dragged a bunch of people onstage without telling anyone that they were going to do it… and while all those people were engulfing the “about 5″8″‘ Billie, Tre couldn’t see him to end the song. The MTV crew had to “kill the pyro” before anyone from the audience was set on fire. The clip also includes the pyro that was supposed to happen in the song. I’m not quite sure why they had to kill the pyro since it was behind Tre… but… it was probably for the best!

It’s a funny clip, and also has a backstage view of Pink’s amazing high-trapeze performance as well.

Here’s the link to MTV’s October 13, 2009 Buzzworthy blog which includes other backstage videos as well.

You can see the clip of Green Day’s full performance here. You can read about my heading up to Radio City Music Hall since I was in the neighborhood and seeing GD leave rehearsal here. (And yes, I WAS JUST IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD that day…no. Seriously. I was!)

Green Day Wins MTV’s Best Rock Video Award 2009

Green Day wins MTV’s Best Rock Video, Best Cinematography, and Best Direction for “21 Guns,” directed by Marc Webb.

Green Day, nominated this year for three of MTV’s Moon Men, won for Best Rock Video, Best Cinematography and Best Direction tonight for “21 Guns.”

Yesterday they made a splash at the awards rehearsal when they rehearsed “East Jesus Nowhere” a few times and then put on an impromptu concert for the staff and crew at Radio City Music Hall. MTV posted four videos of an interview conducted with Green Day behind the scenes at Radio City Music. Click here to view them at MTV’s site.

On another note, I had to work at Bryant Park yesterday, which isn’t far from Radio City Music Hall, so I walked up to Radio City to see if I could see the boys at rehearsal… and missed them going into Radio City by five minutes. But I waited for them to come out and they finally did. I yelled out, “See you in London next month,” and Tré gave me a funny face and I gave him one back. Unfortunately, the video I took sucks balls, so I won’t be putting it up here.

Green Day also performed at the VMA’s tonight and did a rocking version of “East Jesus Nowhere.” Billie snuck in the line, “all the fucks that never learned to read.” bwahaha. The boys… they know how to rock. If MTV posts a video that I can link to, I’ll do that as soon as possible.

Congrats, Green Day, you completely deserve it!

This Is The End…

I’m so glad we had this time together,
Just to have a laugh, and sing a song.
Seems we just got started and before we knew it
Came the time we had to say, ‘So long.’

It seems like eight short weeks ago that Green Day sprang back onto the concert circuit with their 2009 U.S. Tour. And you know what, it was only eight short weeks ago that they started out in Seattle, WA, through to Canada, a bit of the Midwest and back up to the Great North, through Yankee territory, down on to Philly and conquering D.C., to the South and Texas, Middle America, and the West Coast and the Sun Belt, and finally, ending it all last night in LA LA Land.

Do not fret as they make their North American goodbyes, for in a short month, they will begin the breakdown of Europe and all will be well!

In the meantime, there’s MTV’s Video Music Awards coming up, where Green Day will perform (9/13), and Green Day’s American Idiot also begins soon. It’s going to be a busy but laid back month and every one probably needs a break, you know, to sit down with the kids, take a long bath, say hi to the missus, stuff like that. And yes, the end of September brings them traveling out of the country at least through to January. Yes, they will be gone from America for such a long time, but the world needs them, too. LOL. At any rate, rumor has it that there will be a second U.S. tour leg sometime next year. So, Lord willing and the crick don’t rise, we’ll have them back again next year. Can’t wait.

Coming Soon

Green Day’s Summer 2009 American tour has eight more shows (including tonight’s Denver stop) ending on August 25th in L.A. The boys will have a month’s ‘break’ as they head into the final touches of American Idiot: The Musical (previewing on September 4th) as well as a live stop at MTV’s Video Music Awards in New York City on September 13th (vote here for “21 Guns” as Best Rock Video and vote often).

I’m hoping that they have a bit of time for a secret show here in NYC (dreaming… I was was only dreaming… ), but it looks like their month ‘off’ is going to be a bit hectic, to say the least.

After a month of ‘rest,’ Green Day begins their European tour on September 28th, 2009 in Barcelona Lisbon. Hungarian Green Day fansite Castaway Online has created a Google mashup map of their European stops.

For those of you in the United Kingdom in particular, ROCKTOBER (10/21-11/01) is coming your way! I’ll post more about this as soon as I can. In the meanwhile, Jason Chandler, Horrible Comics author and lead singer of The Frustrators, has created an unofficial and limited edition GD UK* Rocktober line of Cafe Press shirts and merchandise just for you! (And anyone else, too.) He’ll stop selling this merchandise when the UK tour rolls around, so get yours here now. Go! NOW!

Green Day ROCKTOBER Baby!

ATTENTION EUROPE: get to at least one Green Day show by ‘any means necessary’! You won’t be disappointed.

*Jason would like everyone to know that GD UK stands for “Godzilla Doesn’t Understand Korean,” which makes me love this logo even more than I did before.
