The Breakdown Will Be Twittered: Tweet Much, Billie Joe?

Twit Much?

I haven’t posted a “The Breakdown Will Be Twittered” alert in awhile, but I was working on my post about Green Day’s Camden show from Tuesday night when all of sudden, the third of not one, but three personal Tweets from Green Day’s Twitter account that didn’t mention anything about buying Rock Band or Pacsun Green Day shorts popped up from none other than -BJ himself. I guess they went off to Buffalo, NY directly after playing Camden on Tuesday and Billie Joe was either really bored in Buffalo or just really excited about stuff, but one Tweet was about the performance in Camden, and the other two about looking for guitars and needing new local band stickers for Blue! Funny and awesome!

And of course since the band doesn’t send personal Tweets that often, I believe that they were inundated by incoming Tweets from teenies of “OMG, BJ SPEAKS,” or comments about his hair, pants, how much he’s loved, or any number of things that would actually probably have to be censored. It’s great when they Tweet occasionally, and yesterday’s messages were kinda cool:

“Bring me stickers of your local bands to the shows! I need more stickers for “blue”!!” -bj about 16 hours ago via UberTwitter

“In buffalo checking out elmwood! Looking for guitars!” about 17 hours ago via UberTwitter

“1st show of tour was amazing! Gr8 to b back in the states. Camden NJ!! Highlight for me was paper lanterns! Ready to fuck shit up! -bj” 1:59 AM Aug 4th

First of all, it was really nice of him to acknowledge the show at Camden and being back home here in the U.S. At the show on Tuesday he made a couple of jokes about being in the States, and when the crowd started to chant, “USA USA,” he jokingly replied, “USSR USSR.” When that didn’t go over very well, he replied, “Actually, it’s more like the country of “BJA” “BJA.” That would be a cool and fun but strange country to live in, I think. There was a great energy at the Camden show, and the band seemed pretty psyched to play. “Paper Lanterns” was sweet to hear, BJA has proven that he knows Internet shorthand (‘Gr8 b’), and we’re all happy that he’s ready to “fuck shit up!”

It’s also pretty cool that he wants stickers of local bands. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Green Day is a band that appreciates music that doesn’t get played much on the National or International level. I’m going to assume that he wants the stickers not only for his guitar, but to also discover what bands are playing locally out there that people dig. Very cool.

So, if you’re going to the shows over the next month, bring him stickers! Not sure how you’re going to actually get them to him, but heck, where there is a will, there is probably a way.

Have fun everyone going to tonight’s gig in Buffalo!

Highlights from the Breakdown – Flashback Detour Ahead/FBHT – “It’s Fuck Time” at Don Hill’s

It may be from an entirely different band, but this clip from the Foxboro Hot Tubs did happen on the road to a 21st Century Breakdown, so I think it’s O.K. I was having a flashback to last April when Jill T. posted this video on Facebook. Funny, I was just looking at this earlier in the week. It made for a refreshing walk to work, watching the video. I just made sure that I didn’t kill myself by walking into traffic. I succeeded, barely.

I’m heading to the Susquehanna Bank Center in beautiful waterfront Camden tomorrow for the North American kickoff tour! No jokes about the crime in Camden are needed. It’s still pretty. Green Day will perform in one of many amphitheater settings for this leg of the tour. It’s not stadium-sized like in Europe, but it’s going to be fun and intimate. Rock on. This particular amphitheater pit (not all of GD’s venues have them) is really small; it fits about 300 1000 people, the same capacity thereabouts to that night of Fuck Time at Don Hill’s.

There are reports of a HAIR ALERT from Billie Joe, who’s gone old school blond. OMG, I can’t believe I just wrote the words, HAIR ALERT. And that’s all I’m going to say about it. For now. 🙂

By the way, since I’ve written about that night at Don Hill’s, you should see some of the hits I get on this blog! It’s calmed down a bit, but it was… how shall we say… uh… explicit there for a while.

Without further ado, one of the greatest moments in rock’n’roll history:

Green Day Starts Second-to-Last Tour Leg, and Greendaymind Begins to Wind Down the Breakdown…

Hello there!

I haven’t been posting much because there hasn’t been much news to talk about since Green Day went on a month-long hiatus after their last concert in Europe was wiped out by storm in Venice back in June. The second-to-last leg of the 21st Century Breakdown tour is about to begin at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ this coming Tuesday, August 3rd, and I’ll be there! Can’t wait to see the boys take the stage again, particularly in a small outdoor venue such at the Susquehanna Bank Center, which I hear is in a nice part of Camden at the waterfront. I’m looking forward to it!

Green Day will be touring South and Central America coming up in October, and I’m sure that the fans down that a-way can’t wait!

Green Day appeared on the Jimmy Fallon show last night and performed, “Last of the American Girls.” This appearance was pre-taped a few months ago during Fallon’s tribute to the Rolling Stones’, “Exile on Main Street” reissue and documentary film. Green Day did a rocking version of the Stone’s “Rip This Joint.” NBC had posted the video on the official Jimmy Fallon site, but it’s now expired. I don’t understand why NBC does this… but hey, I’m not the CEO of a big media corporation, so what do I know? Here’s a link to the Green Day Authority’s posting of the “Last of the American Girls” performance from last night.

Someone had also posted some fabulous footage of Green Day’s impromptu performance at 924 Gilman back in 2001 after the Influents played, but that footage has been taken off of Youtube. You can buy the full video of both the Influents and Green Day playing at Gilman at the Influents site here.

As I’ve noted before, I’m only blogging the Green Day tour until it ends, and I’ll be starting up a new music and performance-related blog about Green Day and other bands, theater, television, and what-not after the tour ends. It’s been a blast, but it’s also been quite tiring. I can only image what a band goes through after almost 18 months on the road. That’s a lot of time and energy. If Green Day decides to add some additional tour dates, I’ll blog about it, but other than that, I’m going to figure out a new blog and name as October approaches. It’s been such a blast over the past months, that I can’t even tell you… and it’s quite helped my mid-life crises, lol. I’ve met some wonderful people and have had some incredible experiences. It overcomes me just thinking about it all.

So, until October, please stick around, I’ll be here, and so will Green Day until they say farewell for however long that they will be underground… Though rumor has it that they are already looking for producers for their next album, have demoed and have written new songs in the old school style for the new album. Let’s hope that’s true! So maybe we won’t have to wait five years for new stuff afterall!

Vote for Me to Win A Trip to Lollapalooza! (And some other stuff, too)

Lollapalooza Vote Now for Fan Photo! Help Us Go to Lollapalooza!

I have exactly three photographs of me with celebrities besides those few friends of mine that I know from undergraduate theater school who are still making great theater and a living from it. Those three are: Regis Philbin (I used to work as a researcher for Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?), Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt. One day I hope to have a picture with Tre Cool, but we’ll see if that ever happens.

I don’t really like asking “celebrities” for their photos. I can’t really pinpoint why I don’t like it, but it might be because I do know people in the “business,” and know how sometimes it’s just creepy to want people to talk to and take pictures of you all the time. I always feel like pictures should be taken of friends, families and things, not people I don’t know. I’m just strange, what can I say? That doesn’t mean I don’t begrudge others who ask for pictures, I don’t, but I would really just want to hang out, so unless folks are around what I consider friends, I don’t really take a lot of pictures of people that I don’t know that’s not in a performance setting.

Anyway, with that long, tortured intro, one of the three people that I do have a picture with, superstar Mike Dirnt of Green Day (and superstar-in-training, Jim Graz of Honah Lee!), I entered into a contest to try and win tickets, roundtrip air fare and hotel to Lollapalooza, which is coming up in hotter-than-hell-in-the-summertime, Chicago, August 6-8 or something. I should probably go and look that up… hmmm.

Vote for the picture, if you’d like! I kinda love it, it’s crazy funny to me, and that’s the way I like my celebrity photographs. If I win, I’m taking Jim and his girlfriend… yawzah… HOT. Here’s the link to my photo and entry. You can click on the photo below, too!

Mike, Jim of Honah Lee and Me. Click to Vote to Help Us See Mike and Company at Lollapalooza!

The vivacious Toniann is also in the contest, so take a look at hers, too! She has a lot more PR personality than me, but you can vote for more than one person per 24-hour time period. The contest ends on July 25th. Please vote! I’d love to go to Lollapalooza, but, who wouldn’t want to go when Green Day is playing at the festival? I’ve never been to one of them, and Soundgarden (yea, I know, I know, I love them, get over it) is also headlining one of the nights. Here’s to me!

You do have to fill out a short registration form to enter, but I do hope you’ll vote!

I tried to find my photo of me and Regis, but it’s no where to be found. It was taken prior to the digital era and is actually just on paper. Actually, it’s only from 2001, but that seems like ages in Internet years. Anyway, here’s my only other pure celebrity photo, with Billie Joe. I could only submit one photo to the contest, so I had to make a choice. I love both of the photos, but the one with Mike and Jim just makes me laugh a good bellylaugh, so I had to go with it. It’s from the Foxboro Hot Tubs show at Don Hill’s, one of the best nights of my life. The photo below of Billie Joe Armstrong and me is from what I call, “Fake New Years,” back in November when Green Day taped their New Years Eve show for Carson Daly in Los Angeles.

Green Day Show in Venice Canceled

I was going to write about the canceled Venice show with the wind and hail and evil Venice weather, but it kinda made me so sad to think that the European tour ended by storm, that I didn’t want to think too much about it, so I didn’t write it, but I do have an awesome title for it, “Green Day in Europe Goes Out With a Storm – Venice Canceled Due to Various Acts of God (y’know, Thunder, Lightning, Hail),” haha… I felt really bad for the fans in Venice who didn’t get to see the boys, and I’m sad that the boys didn’t get to go out of Europe with a bang that ended in fireworks instead of lightning. The GDA covered it here [LINK] and here [LINK]

Green Day in Paris – Mathilde Oremus Photographs

Green Day in Paris - Photograph by Mathilde Oremus

When I went to Berkeley to see Pinhead Gunpowder [VIDEO] [AUDIO] [BLOGPOST] and the Mystic Knights of the Cobra back in February, I met Marjorie Beaugad at 924 Gilman’s Pinhead Gunpowder show. Marjorie was from Paris, and she was just finishing up a year of study in San Francisco. She had seen some excellent music over her year at school in San Francisco, and also attended Green Day’s small venue show last year at the Trabendo on May 12th, 2009 in Paris. She even sang “Longview” with them.

Soon after the Pinhead Gunpowder show, Marjorie’s year in San Francisco was over, and she moved back home to Paris, a beautiful, if complicated, city. She and her friend, Mathilde Oremus, attended this past June’s Paris gig at Parc des Princes stadium. Mathilde shot some excellent views, and I asked her if I could highlight images here. Mathilde’s full set of 168 photographs may be found on her Facebook page.

Mathilde photographed all three bands that appeared at Parc des Princes: Billy Talent, Paramore, and of course, Green Day. She took some especially nice photographs of Mike, as well as photos of Billie Joe, Tre, and fans, including the Aussies!

Aussie Fans Invade Europe for Green Day Tour – Pictures by Kerry Harris

The Aussies are Here! Kerry Harris and Mates Travel to Europe for a Bazillion Green Day Shows - June 2010

A marvelous gang of dedicated Australian fans who attended almost all of the shows that Green Day performed in Australia last year, decided to take a huge road trip for the second leg of the European tour. I don’t know how many shows that they went to in the United Kingdom and Europe, but I do know that they had fun!

The gang was led by Kerry Harris who also created some excellent paintings of the band that I highlighted here last year. Kerry is also a photographer and took some beautiful and fun shots during the tour, including probably one of the prettiest shots of Billie Joe that I have ever seen. I asked her if I could post some of her photos. They show a lot of the onstage antics of the band and captures one fan’s viewpoint of many different shows.

That Time Of Year – Happy Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong!

Hair Alert! BJA Gets A Haircut Maybe for his Lady, 80! (Click on Pic for More Mainz Pics!)

Mr. and Mrs. Billie Joe and Adrienne Armstrong celebrate their wedding anniversary tomorrow, on July 2nd. Congratulations! I wrote about their anniversary last year and I have nothing to add except for a hearty mazol tov and many happy returns to you both!

Green Day appeared in Mainz on July 1st and played some “It’s Fuck Time” during the “Shout” portion of the evening. I’ve heard it’s a little bit different from a Foxboro Hot Tubs rendition of the song, ahem, so we’ll have to compare the versions if something shows up on the InterTubes. Billie Joe got a haircut, too, looks a bit like Elvis! Maybe he’s getting all spiffy for his lady, Adie, yo yo on his Anniversaire!! Holla!

Tomorrow night the band will be in Belgium at the Rock Werchter 2010 festival and then end the second leg of their European tour on July 4th in Venice, Italy, land of water and love at the Heineken Jammin! Festival. Sounds like a lovely place to spend some anniversary and family time after the Heineken and love hangover. Have an awesome vacation!

Cheers to the entire band and crew for a fabulous European tour. See you all in Northern America in August! We are ready to rock.

Highlights of The Breakdown – Green Day at Wembley Stadium

Punks Play for Autism

I missed Green Day’s show at Wembley Stadium. I had a ticket, but could not afford the airfare across the pond (told you Lushie luck runs out occasionally). My ticket had a fabulous time with Jax May, the folks at Nova-Caine, and the Raxorbax gig that happened the night before Wembley, at the Luminaire Club. The Punks Play for Autism gig raised over a £1000 for the organization. Major success! Hopefully some video will be coming from the show in the future, possibly a soundboard mix. The boys known as Green Day donated a vinyl copy of 21st Century Breakdown, the only one of its kind that is signed by the full touring band including Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, Tre Cool, Jason White, Jason Freese, and Jeff Matika. How awesome is all of that?

Greet, a Lushie Nun Mother from Belgium who attended the Razorbax show was the successful bidder winner. And here’s the baby here:

Green Day at Wembley Stadium

I tried writing about this show, but frankly, I was a little sad that I couldn’t go, so it was a little hard writing about the show since A) I wasn’t there, and B), well, sadly, I wasn’t there. Sigh. I’ve been a bit whiney about it, too, but hey, it happens, lol. I hear from folks who went that it was great, and really, I believe it.

What I really missed out on was hearing for the first time on Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown tour, the band singing “Waiting.” Sigh.

“Waiting” – Green Day Wembley Stadium – June 19, 2010

I did watch several clips of this show and read every page of the Wembley thread at the Green Day Community, so I feel in a way that I was there, but it’s all in bits and pieces of lore. Some good stories, too, of long lines at Wembley, what Billie Joe said about leaving Green Day in a coffin, of how Tre sang during the “Shout” part of the night, and hey, Mike grabbed the mic at one point too and kicked his legs higher than Tre!

Green Day Blow Themselves Up at Wembley! What a Show! Photo by Unknown Photographer found by Greet Druyts

I also saw a clip of the pyro that went off during the “Minority” encore, but I saw it only on Facebook and can’t seem to locate it on the Youtubes at the moment. Suffice it to say, at the part where the blowers go off and confetti goes flying through the air, there were fireworks that seem to almost blow the band up! Luckily, they survived and appeared a few days later in Glasgow, and will be playing tomorrow night, 6/23/2010, in Dublin.

Ah, good times.

Here’s a Facebook link to Greet Druyts’ photos from London from both the Razorbax and Green Day shows. Take a look, they are fantastic!

With that, I’m off tomorrow to the San Francisco Bay Area! The Mystic Knights of the Cobra and Prima Donna are on a four-night mini-tour, and I’m going to go and dance a bit for two of them! And do some other stuff, too. Later!
